How to File RTI to Central Government Departments – Full Process (2025)


   Step 1: Visit the Official RTI Online Portal

Go to the Central Government’s official RTI portal:


   Step 2: Click on “Submit Request”

  • On the homepage, click “Submit Request” under the “Online RTI Request Form”.

  • Read the guidelines carefully and click “I have read and understood the above guidelines”, then click Submit.


   Step 3: Fill in Personal Details

        Select the Ministry/Department from the dropdown list (e.g., Ministry of Railways, Income Tax Department, etc.).

  • Enter:

    • Your full name

    • Address

    • Email ID

    • Phone number

    • State and country


    Step 4: Write Your RTI Query

  • Enter your query in 3000 characters or less.

  • Be clear and specific (e.g., “Please provide the number of sanctioned posts in XYZ department as of January 2025.”)


    Step 5: Upload Supporting Documents (Optional)

  • If needed, you may attach a supporting PDF or image file (max 1 MB).

  • This is optional unless your case requires proof or a document.


   Step 6: Pay the RTI Fee

  • RTI application fee: ₹10

  • Payment options:

    • UPI

    • Debit/Credit Card

    • Internet Banking

Note: BPL (Below Poverty Line) applicants can apply free of charge (upload proof of BPL status).


   Step 7: Submit the Application

  • After payment, you will receive a registration number and acknowledgment receipt.

  • Save this number to track the status later.


   Step 8: Wait for the Response

  • RTI response must be given within 30 days from the date of application.

  • If there’s no reply or it is unsatisfactory, you can file a First Appeal.


  Important Points

  • You can file RTIs to any Central Govt. body: Ministries, CBSE, UPSC, Railways, Income Tax, etc.

  • Use precise language; don’t ask vague or multiple unrelated questions.

  • You are not required to give reasons for seeking the information.

  How to File First Appeal (If No Response)

  1. Visit https://rtionline.gov.in/RTIMIS/FilingAppeal.aspx

  3. State your reason for the appeal (e.g., “No reply within 30 days”)

  4. Submit the appeal to the First Appellate Authority
